Microsoft Office 365 displays your account name in the title bar of applications like Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. While this can be convenient, you may prefer to remove it for privacy reasons or a cleaner look. This article will walk you through the process of removing your username from the Office 365 title bar using the Windows Registry Editor.
Important: Modifying the Windows Registry can potentially cause system issues if done incorrectly. Be sure to back up your registry before making any changes.
Step 1: Open the Registry Editor by pressing the Windows key + R to open the Run dialog, then type “regedit” and press Enter. If prompted by User Account Control, click Yes to allow the app to make changes.
Step 2: In the Registry Editor, navigate to the following key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\16.0\Common\Identity\Identities\
Step 3: Under the Identities key, you may see one or more subfolders. Click on each subfolder and look for an entry called “FriendlyName” in the right pane.
Step 4: When you find the “FriendlyName” entry, double-click on it. You’ll see your Microsoft account name in the “Value data” field.
Step 5: To remove your name from the Office 365 title bar, delete all text from the “Value data” field, leaving it blank. Click OK to save the change.
Step 6: Close the Registry Editor and restart your computer for the changes to take effect.
After your computer restarts, open any Office 365 application. You should now see that your username has been removed from the title bar.
If you ever want to restore your name to the title bar, simply follow the same steps and re-enter your name in the “FriendlyName” value data field. Remember, keeping your system and applications updated is always a good practice for optimal performance and security.
