This guide walks you through two methods to get Llama 3 up and running on your machine.
Method 1: Installing Llama 3 via Command Prompt
This method allows you to run Llama 3 directly from the command line, offering a lightweight solution for users comfortable with text-based interfaces.
Step 1: Visit the Ollama website and download the Windows installer. Ollama is an open-source tool that simplifies running large language models locally.
Step 2: Run the downloaded executable file to install Ollama on your system. After installation, restart your computer to ensure all components are properly initialized.
Step 3: Once your system restarts, Ollama should be running in the background. You can verify this by checking your system tray for the Ollama icon.
Step 4: Open Command Prompt as an administrator. You can do this by right-clicking on the Start button and selecting “Windows Terminal (Admin)” or searching for “Command Prompt” in the Start menu, right-clicking, and choosing “Run as administrator”.
Step 5: To install Llama 3, you’ll need to choose between different model sizes. For most users, the 3B parameter model offers a good balance of performance and resource usage. To install it, type the following command and press Enter:

Step 2: Download and install Docker Desktop from the official Docker website. Docker is a platform that allows you to run applications in containers, which we’ll use to set up the web interface for Llama 3.
Step 3: After installing Docker, launch the application and create an account or sign in. Docker requires an account to function properly.
Step 4: Once signed in, minimize Docker to the system tray. Ensure both Docker and Ollama are running in the background.
Step 5: Open Command Prompt as an administrator and run the following command to set up the web interface container:
docker run -d -p 3000:8080 --add-host=host.docker.internal:host-gateway -v open-webui:/app/backend/data --name open-webui --restart always ghcr.io/open-webui/open-webui:main
This command creates a Docker container that hosts the web interface for Llama 3.

Step 9: Select your preferred Llama 3 model from the dropdown menu in the interface. You can now start chatting with Llama 3 through this user-friendly web interface.
To use Llama 3 in the future, simply ensure that both Ollama and Docker are running, then access the web interface through the Docker Desktop container port as described in Step 7.
