How to Enable or Disable Game DVR and Game Bar in Windows 11

Windows 11 comes with built-in gaming features like Game DVR and Game Bar that allow you to record gameplay, take screenshots, and access various widgets. While these tools can be useful for many gamers, others may find them unnecessary or even detrimental to performance. This guide will walk you through the process of enabling or disabling these features to suit your preferences.

What are Game DVR and Game Bar?

Game DVR (Digital Video Recorder) is a feature that allows you to record your gameplay in the background. It’s part of the Game Bar, which is an overlay interface providing quick access to various gaming-related functions. The Game Bar can be opened by pressing Windows key + G during gameplay.

Method 1: Using Windows Settings

Step 1: Open the Windows Settings by right-clicking the Start button and selecting “Settings” or by pressing Windows key + I.

Step 2: Click on “Gaming” in the left sidebar.

Step 3: Select “Xbox Game Bar” from the options on the right.

Step 4: To disable the Game Bar, toggle off the switch next to “Open Xbox Game Bar using this button on a controller.” This will prevent the Game Bar from opening when you press the Xbox button on a controller.

Step 5: To disable background recording (Game DVR), click on “Captures” in the left sidebar under the Gaming section.

Step 6: Toggle off the “Record what happened” option to disable background recording.

Method 2: Using the Registry Editor

Caution: Modifying the registry can cause serious problems if done incorrectly. It’s recommended to create a backup of your registry before proceeding.

Step 1: Open the Registry Editor by pressing Windows key + R, typing “regedit”, and pressing Enter.

Step 2: Navigate to the following key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\GameDVR

Step 3: Find the “AppCaptureEnabled” value on the right side. If it doesn’t exist, right-click in the right pane, select “New” > “DWORD (32-bit) Value”, and name it “AppCaptureEnabled”.

Step 4: Double-click “AppCaptureEnabled” and set its value to 0 to disable Game DVR, or 1 to enable it.

Step 5: Navigate to this key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\System\GameConfigStore

Step 6: Find or create a DWORD value named “GameDVR_Enabled” and set it to 0 to disable or 1 to enable.

Step 7: Restart your computer for the changes to take effect.

Method 3: Using Group Policy Editor (Windows 11 Pro and Enterprise only)

Step 1: Open the Group Policy Editor by pressing Windows key + R, typing “gpedit.msc”, and pressing Enter.

Step 2: Navigate to Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Windows Game Recording and Broadcasting.

Step 3: Double-click on “Enables or disables Windows Game Recording and Broadcasting”.

Step 4: Select “Disabled” to turn off Game DVR and Game Bar, or “Enabled” to turn them on. Click “Apply” and then “OK”.

Step 5: Restart your computer for the changes to take effect.

Disabling Xbox Game Bar App

If you want to completely remove the Xbox Game Bar, you can disable the app:

Step 1: Open Settings and go to “Apps” > “Apps & features”.

Step 2: Search for “Xbox Game Bar” in the list of installed apps.

Step 3: Click on the three dots next to Xbox Game Bar and select “Advanced options”.

Step 4: Scroll down to “Background app permissions” and select “Never” from the dropdown menu.

Step 5: Click the “Terminate” button to stop all processes related to Xbox Game Bar.

Disabling Game DVR and Game Bar can potentially improve gaming performance, especially on lower-end systems. However, you’ll lose the ability to easily record gameplay or take screenshots using Windows’ built-in tools. Consider your needs carefully before disabling these features.

Whether you choose to keep Game DVR and Game Bar enabled or decide to turn them off, Windows 11 offers flexibility to customize your gaming experience. Experiment with different settings to find what works best for your system and gaming style.
